He was a major force in Kentucky amateur golf for four decades (the 1940’s, 1950’s, 1960’s, 1970’s), winning more than 25 tournaments and earning the reputation as one of the fiercest competitors in Kentucky golfing history. Lear was a highly-respected insurance agent (Connecticut Mutual, Massachusetts Mutual), real estate developer, farmer, horseman, preservationist, and champion golfer. In a career spanning nearly 70 years, Mr.
Lear attended the Wilmore Elementary School, Morton Junior High School, Henry Clay High School, and the University of Kentucky from which he graduated in 1951.ĭuring World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. He was born on Augon North Maple Street in Wilmore, Kentucky. William Marvin Lear, Sr., 82, of Lexington, Kentucky, beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died on September 23, 2007.
